The Trump administration is reportedly considering imposing new national security tariffs on approximately six industries. This move follows a recent Supreme Court decision that invalidated many of the president's previously enacted tariffs. The potential new tariffs would be implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which grants the President authority to impose tariffs based on national security concerns. These new levies would be separate from a recently announced global 15% tariff, which can be maintained for 150 days before requiring Congressional approval. Industries potentially targeted include large-scale batteries, cast iron and iron fittings, plastic piping, industrial chemicals, and power grid and telecom equipment. Tariffs previously imposed on steel, aluminum, copper, and automobile parts under Section 232 are not affected by the Supreme Court ruling.
