Col. William Parks, received the Silver Star Medal for his actions during a March mission in the Middle East, where he evaded enemy missiles for 15 minutes using extreme high-G maneuvers.
The incident occurred during Operation Rough Rider, the US military's bombing campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen. Parks, serving as mission commander, intentionally placed himself in danger to suppress enemy air defenses, allowing other US aircraft to strike targets.
His fighter jet was subjected to a prolonged barrage of surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery, with munitions exploding mere feet away. The pilot also successfully coordinated an emergency refueling to prevent aircraft loss.
The mission highlighted the risks involved in engaging even smaller adversaries and demonstrated innovative weapons employment, including the use of older missile technology.
